Recycle Your Garden
A few months ago, I pruned a bush in my backyard and held back some of the dead branches in a pile near the back of the house. Today, those sticks came in handy when I needed something to stake my peas, which are in full bloom and doubling over on themselves.
A few weekends ago, I made an unsuccesful venture to a local gardening center to find something to stake my bean and pea plants. I knew that soon, if I wanted to sustain their life, I would have to give them some support. I spent $20, brought home my loot, got tangled up in my loot with my two-year old and then took the loot back to the store. None of it worked.
Then, life hit. Days turned into weeks and before I knew it, the peas and beans were in desperate need of help. With a Tornado watch on the horizon, I decided to grab what I had on hand - those dead branches from a bush I pruned. I discovered that they were thick enough, and sturdy enough to support my peas. I had dozens of them at my disposal, and even better, they were free. And, they avoided going to the landfill.
Next time, I will go to the pile before I go to the store.
